Sambar for Idly / Dosa


Moong dhal – 1/2 cup

Onion – 1

Tomato – 2

Green chilly – 2

Curry leaves – 1 string

Coriander leaves (Chopped) – 1 tbs

Turmeric powder – 1 tsp

Salt – to taste

Mustard seeds – 1 tsp

Urad dhal – 1/2 tsp

Oil – 1 tbs


Pressure cook the moong dhal with 1 1/2 cups of water and 1 tsp turmeric. Chop onion. Heat a kadai and do tadka with mustard, urad dhal, green chilly and curry leaves. Add onion. Reduce the flame and chop tomatoes and add it to onion. Add 1/4 tsp of salt and cook onion and tomato for 2 minutes in medium flame. Add 1/2 cup water (you can use the dhal water) and let it boil for 2 minutes. Add cooked dhal to this and add enough salt. Add little water if required. Let it boil for 5 minutes or until you get your desired consistency. Add coriander leaves and switch off.
