I met one famous Tamil blogger on last Friday.
I am a regular reader of her blog and I came to know that she resides at the same building where my in-laws stay 🙂 I sent a mail to her to confirm the same and yes, she stays just two floors away.
She came to our house on Friday to invite my MIL for golu and I was excited as I met her unexpectedly.
We went to her house in the same day and she kept a very simple yet nice golu. She is around 60 years old and she manages her house without maid and she goes to temple which is 3 k.m. away by walk.
Today I met her near lift and she was talking to me as if we know each other for years now 🙂 I am glad that I met her.
On a different note, I visited one golu which had all the dolls made out of beads. It was so beautiful and I asked whether I can take photo but they refused. To take revenge Bingo demanded gift separately for her. Heheh… 😉
Today we saw an awesome dance by Andal (Andal is the name of Srirangam temple’s elephant). During Navarathiri, Andal dances for goddess Ranga Nachiyar (Lakshmi) and also plays mouth organ 🙂
I was pestering my in-laws for the past 4 days and finally we went today. Though we went half an hour before, we could not go anywhere near to Andal. But, what fun it was. We could not hear the music from mouth organ play as the crowd cheered madly for Andal. I want to go again tomorrow. Let’s see. My MIL says one cannot decide to visit Ranganathar; he himself should decide whether one can see him or not. Oh! God.. please allow me tomorrow to see your beloved Andal.
Leaving you with some blurred photos.
That’s her leaving after the performance 🙂
Golu is full swing here in Srirangam. I am visiting at least two house everyday to get thamboolam and they insist me to sing a song and I sing with abaswaram. Meanwhile, Bingo is mastered the art of doing namaskaram on request and getting her share of vethala paaku. We carry a bag and it’s Bingo’s duty to collect whatever we get at host’s place and bring home. As on today we have collected:
6 small dabbas of turmeric and kumkum
3 kuber (!!) Diya
1 show piece
at least a dozen banana
1/4 kilo sundal
dozens of vethala paaku
It’s quiet enjoyable to visit different golus and listening to their stories of how they celebrate at their amma / in-laws place, how some dolls are centuries older etc.
As i always say, festivals are fun and enjoyment.
Green moong / black channa / white channa / pea nuts (any one. Recipe is same for all) – 2 cups (soak for 6 – 8 hours. For peanuts 3 hours of soaking is enough)
Pressure cook with 4 cups of water and 2 teaspoon of salt until soft. Drain and keep aside.
Heat a teaspoon of oil in a kadai or tadka pan. Add mustard; let it splutter. Add urad dhal and once it turns pink switch off and add two strings of curry leaves. Pour this to cooked and drained green moong / black channa / white channa. Add grated coconut as per your wish. mix them together and offer it to god and then eat it.
